Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service, January 16, 2012

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr said, “Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: ‘What are you doing for others?” Every year, families and people from all neighborhoods and communities come together on this national day of service to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. The MLK Day of Service is a part of the President’s national call to service initiatives. It calls for Americans from all walks of life to work together to provide solutions to our most pressing national problems.

We still have work to do to realize Dr. King’s dream of a better world. People of all ages, backgrounds, and abilities can get involved! Service to others happens every day. When a stranger stumbles because he is carrying too many bags, we reach out to steady him. Someone is lost, and we give her directions. A child is cold, and we donate a coat. The MLK Day of Service brings service to a new level. United by a common desire to meet needs and make differences, we work together for lasting improvements; changes we could not achieve on our own.

Becoming involved in The MLK Day of Service allows you to be involved in a nationwide effort to better your corner of the world. Whether that means hosting a service project to address a need you see in the community or becoming involved in a project that focuses on an area you feel strongly about. The MLK Day of Service is a way to transform Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr’s life and teachings into community service that helps solve social problems.

Some project ideas include recruiting and training volunteers to be mentors or tutors, providing job readiness training by teaching resume writing or interview skills, providing food assistance by bringing meals to homebound neighbors or organizing a food donation drive, improving children’s quality of life by building a playground or running a day camp for children with working parents and improving the community by removing graffiti from a building or by making a public space accessible for the disables neighbors.

On this day, Americans and Coloradans of all ages will come together through service projects that strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers and create solutions.
