Board
Candidate FAQs
Who can apply for Metro Volunteers Board Leadership Connection?
Anyone over
18 years of age may apply. Experience in areas such as law, finance,
PR/marketing, fundraising, management and organizational development is
helpful but not necessary. The desire to lead and make a difference in the
community is essential. Training is limited to candidates seeking
introductions to participating nonprofit organizations for board service.
What
will I learn in the training?
The training is designed for
someone with little or no experience with nonprofit boards and is interested
in meeting with local nonprofit boards for potential board service, as well
as those with previous board experience who wish to refresh their
understanding of board service. Although 3 hours isn’t nearly enough
time to teach everything a board member should know, it provides a good
overview of roles
and responsibilities
so that new board members can feel comfortable with their position on a
board of directors.
Is there any cost to attend the training?
The $75
training fee covers the resource manual and instruction as well as the board
matching process upon completion of the class.
How will I be matched to an organization?
You will be
asked to complete an application online and create a profile. After the
training, you will be able to review profiles of our Member Nonprofit
Agencies seeking board members. We can then assist you in contacting
organizations of interest.
Through your
profile, nonprofits will be introduced to your availability, skills and
interests. You will then be requested to contact them to introduce yourself
and schedule a “Get To Know You” meeting.
You are
under no obligation to join the board of any of these organizations. The
screening process is the role of the board and the individual. Metro
Volunteers Board Leadership Connection does not guarantee that you will be placed on a
nonprofit board of directors, however, we will do our best to assist you in
the initial matching process and will work with you to help you find a board
that complements your interests.
